Fueling Your Drive

Got a big goal? Seeing the 5-year vision?

That's got to be a huge goal—you can accomplish a lot in 5 years. It feels exciting, doesn't it? You feel the energy, the drive. You want to start now.

But along the way, it can also get overwhelming. When you see the obstacles. The unending task list. Then you step back, look at the path from where you are now to where you want to be—now it's just disheartening. So much to do, so much to accomplish. Can it be done? Can you get there?

Doubts start. Resistance grows stronger. Excitement fizzles out.

It happens to all of us. But don't worry—you can prepare for it. How?

Mini goals.

Short-term goals can keep us motivated and excited. They're easier and faster to accomplish, so there's something to look forward to in the nearer future. It feels doable. Just the right amount of comfort and challenge.

How small? Think yearly. Monthly. And weekly.

You need to zoom in to see the concrete path. What should be accomplished this week? Next week? How about next month and next year? You need to know exactly how progress looks like, what short-term goals you need to work on.

Then, every week and every month and every year, celebrate those goals you accomplished. Those happy hormones will help sustain your drive—on to the next mini goal, and forward to the big goal.
